4 Dog Travel Accessories For Traveling With Large Dogs
Fun fact, I love traveling with my dogs! Traveling with large dogs though can require some much needed dog travel gear. One of my goals when launching my dog-friendly travel series was to share my favorite dog travel accessories that are helpful for numerous adventures. Whether you’re going to a dog-friendly beach or trip to your favorite dog park, I use the dog travel accessories featured in this post every single time!
In this post I’ll be sharing more information about one of the best dog car seat covers, one of my favorite dog ramps for large dogs, the coolest orthopedic SUV dog bed, and a car barrier for dogs and why all of these are helpful dog travel accessories!
Dog Gone Smart Pet Products Dirty Dog Car Seat Cover
The first of four dog travel accessories that I’m featuring in this post is from one of my favorite brands, Dog Gone Smart Pet Products (D.G.S. Pet Products). If you’re new to this brand, they are known for their microfiber towels for dogs known as their Dirty Dog Shammy Dog Towels. These bath towels for dogs can soak up to 8X its’ weight in water and they have helpful hand pockets so you can hold on to your dog as you dry them!
Their newest product that launched earlier this year is their Dog Gone Smart Dirty Dog Car Seat Cover! In my opinion, this is one of the best dog car seat covers on the market. What’s unique about this dog car hammock is it’s combination of different fabrics.
The fabric covering the seat part of your backseat is made of their famous Dirty Dog microfiber dog towel material and the remaining fabric is a durable, water-resistant quilted fabric that holds up against the toughest dog nails (Diesel proof, ha!). We’ve used ours for about six months now and it still looks brand new which is incredible to me. I personally think this is one of the best rated dog car hammocks on the market and is worth every penny!

PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping Dog Ramp
The next item that is a must-have for traveling with large dogs is the PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping Dog Ramp. Dog ramps for large dogs are extremely helpful for protecting your dog’s joints from jumping into cars, helping your dog’s mobility as they age, and for dogs that can’t get into your vehicle due to their size (or the size of your car) or because of any physical restraints they may be facing.
The Petsafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping Dog Ramp has many cool features like:
- High-traction surface and side rails to keep your dog from slipping (it feels like sand paper!)
- High weight limit of 300 pounds (made of heavy-duty aluminum)
- Extends from 47-87 inches long to reach multiple vehicle heights
- Lightweight dog ramp weighing at 18 pounds
- Slides together and latches for easy storage (PetSafe also makes folding dog ramps for cars)
This PetSafe dog ramp also comes in a smaller size (in length) known as their PetSafe Happy Ride Telescoping Dog Ramp that extends 39-72 inches long and can hold up to 400 pounds. Because of all of the incredible features included in this dog ramp for large dogs, I personally think it’s the best dog ramp for SUV’s, and best dog ramps for pickup trucks.
Pro Tip: To know which is the best dog ramp for your car, I would first see how much length is actually needed for your dog to get into your car. I like this extra long dog ramp for large dogs because with a longer length, I can create a flatter path to my car instead of a super high incline. Even though Diesel and Annie have done agility A-frames before, I want getting into the car to be an easy, relaxing experience.
Big Barker Backseat Barker SUV Dog Bed
The third dog travel accessories item for traveling with large dogs is from another one of my favorite dog brands that we’ve used for years called Big Barker. If you’re new to Big Barker, this incredible dog brand creates the BEST orthopedic dog beds for large dogs. These made in America dog beds feature a specially designed multi-layer memory foam that helps provide extra relief and support for large and extra large breeds.

PetSafe Happy Ride Dog Car Barrier
The last dog travel accessories item featured is the PetSafe Happy Ride Dog Car Barrier. Since Diesel was a puppy, he has always wanted to know everything that was going on during the car ride, and in his mind, the only way to do this was to put his paws on the center console and “surf” as we call it, ha! Even though this is quite adorable, it’s NOT safe at all.
If you’ve ever wondered how to keep a dog in the backseat, investing in a car net for dogs or a dog guard for your car is super helpful. There are many different kinds of barriers for dogs in cars including a front seat dog barrier and a back seat dog barrier. The PetSafe Happy Ride Dog Car Barrier is a mesh dog guard for your car and a front seat dog barrier.
This vehicle dog barrier comes with easy assemble instructions inside the box but below is a quick photo breakdown of how to assemble with step-by-step instructions under each photo.
Step 1: Start by assembling your two sticks included together and inserting them into their keepers at the top and bottom (the middle line on the barrier in this photo).
Step 2: Place your dog car barrier between your two front seats and see where it rests and then choose the appropriate clip height. I chose the top clip since my seats are a bit higher.
Step 3: With the middle structure line assembled, begin securing both straps around the each headrest on the front seats. Similar to when you tighten/loosen a dog collar, bra strap (ha!), etc.
Step 4. Once you have put the fabric through the rings, pull on the long end to secure.
Step 5: Grab the white seat anchor that is hanging at the bottom of your dog car barrier and put it on your passenger front car seat.
Step 6: Push white seat anchor into your seat (between bottom of the seat and back as shown) to fully secure. That’s all there is to it!
So now I have to ask, which of the four dog travel accessories was your favorite? I don’t think I can pick a favorite since I love all of them and they each serve a different, helpful purpose!
