When exploring dog hiking trails in Florida, one of the biggest things you will encounter year-round are bugs! From mosquitoes to fleas and ticks thriving in the humid & moist Florida environment, one must always have protection from these harmful creatures.
One of my favorite brands that I’ve featured numerous times on my dog mom blog, Dog Gone Smart Pet Products (DGS Pet Products) actually has a really cool product that is helpful for keeping bugs off your dog.
In this post I’ll be sharing all about how the DGS Pet UnBugz It dog bandana works, what it’s made out of and other important information like sizing and what NOT to use these bandanas for.

That’s what we’re going to go over today with this helpful product! The most common bugs that most people probably know about affecting dogs are fleas and ticks. In addition to these, two others that affect dogs are mites and mosquitoes! Dogs get bit all the time and all of these can cause a lot of harm to dogs including heartworms, Lyme disease, hair loss and more.
**One important thing that I want to note now is that this dog bandana is NOT a replacement for regular flea & tick medication. In order to keep your dog protected and healthy, please keep your dog on the recommended flea and tick medication provided by your veterinarian.**
How Do DGS Pet UnBugz It Bandanas Work?
So how do the DGS Pet UnBugz It Bandanas actually work? The fabric used for the UnBugz It bandanas is actually bonded with pyrethrin, which is a common and safe ingredient for insect protection for dogs and humans.
These dog bandanas are odorless and are effective through at least 25 washes!
Now, let’s get a good understanding of what Pyrethrin is and answer a commonly asked question, “is pyrethrin safe for dogs?”.
Is Pyrethrin Safe For Dogs?
Now you’re probably wondering, well what is pyrethrin and is pyrethrin safe for dogs? Short answer is yes, pyrethrin is safe for dogs.
Pyrethrin is a synthetic (artificial) ingredient made from the Chrysanthemum flower which is a commonly used ingredient for insect protection for dogs and humans. If you use any topical flea and tick medications, you’ve probably seen this ingredient before!
One VERY important thing to note here is that pyrethrin is NOT safe for cats. Pyrethrin for cats can be very toxic (to fish too). According to this article from VCA Hospitals, “Cats are also very sensitive to pyrethroids and pyrethrins because they’re unable to metabolize (break down) these agents quickly and efficiently due to their peculiar liver metabolism.”.
I wanted to mention that because there are many people who enjoy hiking with cats and since these dog bandanas do come in smaller sizes, I’d hate for anyone to put one on their cat and have their cat have a horrible or fatal reaction.

- X-Large
Diesel is wearing the X-Large size and Annie is wearing the large size! They are adjustable so you can really make sure you find the right fit. You never want a dog bandana to be too tight or too loose. These dog bandanas also come in four fun colors that will look good on any dog!
