This summer I have been sharing ways to keep your favorite animals cool throughout the scorching summer heat. Today’s post is all about your dog’s paw pads. Did you know that a dog’s paw pads are the same thing as our hands? They feel all kinds of temperatures and textures and are sensitive just like ours! Because of this, they have to be kept cool just like our hands in the summer! Below are a few facts and ways to prevent burning your dog’s paw pads this summer.

Check out this post about 7 summer horse care tips to help keep your horse cool and happy!

Have you ever placed your hand on black asphalt in the summer? I’m talking no shade and in direct sunlight. If you have you know how hot it is! If you haven’t, put your hand on it so that you can feel it. Now, picture your dog walking on that everyday.

All dark colors hold in the heat (i.e. black clothing, black cars, etc.) versus the color white that reflects heat. If you ever have the choice, always choose to walk on the grass. By doing this, you are giving your dog’s feet the best chance at staying cool.

Speaking of walking, always try to walk your pet when it’s cooler. Early morning or evening walks are always best to avoid the hot sun. During those times, it’s good to walk your dog on the pavement because is strengthens their paw pads against tough surfaces.

Another option that can help prevent burnt paw pads is shoes for your dog. These are more commonly seen in the winter months with snow, but dogs can also wear them to protect their paws from the sun.

Petsmart and Petco have a great selection of shoes that are great for different types of terrain and weather. See them herehere, and here
