Benefits of Lick Mats For Dogs

Dog lick mats have always been one of my favorite dog enrichment ideas because not only do they provide a healthy treat (or full meal) for our dogs, they can help them mentally in many ways. Check out the list below for the many benefits of lick mats for dogs:

  • Anxiety reliever
    • Licking is a natural way for your dog to reduce stress and anxiety. Since dog lick mats have many different surfaces and textures, this provides a lot of stimulation for your dog.
  • Boredom buster
    • Instead of your dog getting into something the shouldn’t, when you give them a dog lick mat, this allows them to focus their full attention on that. Plus, if you freeze it, it lasts even longer and provides even more dog enrichment!
  • Training aid
    • Dog lick mats can aid in crate training, bath time, nail trims, so many positive things!
  • Slow feeder
    • If you do have a dog that eats too fast and want to know how to slow them down, lick mats double as slow feeder dog bowls! Dog lick mats come in many designs, allowing you to mash and spread out their food, no matter what kind of diet they’re on. Some of my favorites for this are the Lickimat Wobble Bowl, Lickimat Yoggie Pot and the Lickimat Slomo.

To make this fun peeps inspired Easter dog treat dog lick mat idea, all you need is the following (for all 3 treat flavors):

  • Strawberries (1-3)
  • 1 Banana
  • A few small dog treats or your dog’s food
  • Lickimat Buddy (regular or XL – XL is featured here)

How To Make – Peeps Easter Dog Lick Mat Treat Idea:

Now that we’ve gathered all of our ingredients for our Easter dog lick mat treat idea, follow the easy steps below to make each flavor of these healthy frozen treats for dogs in minutes!

Flavor 1: Banana Peep

Step 1: Grab your piping bag and plain Greek yogurt. Add a few spoonfuls of yogurt to your piping bag to start.

Step 2: Grab your Lickimat Buddy Being creating your peeps outline by tracing one large circle that comes about halfway up your mat (where the brand label indents are in the photo below). Then create a slightly smaller circle above. Create two bunny ears above to finish your outline.

Pro Tip: For many of my recipes, I do freehand them. Now trust me, I know that’s not easy to do all the time (and I do practice before I shoot this, ha!). If this already looks intimidating but you love the idea, print out a photo of a peep that fits on a regular sheet of paper and trace it on your lick mat!

Step 3: Freeze for 15-20 minutes to let the yogurt harden.

Pro Tip: I use this time to play a fun game with my dogs or go on a short walk. Might as well use the time for something fun!

Step 4: In a bowl, mash a banana.

Step 5: Grab your Lickmat Buddy from the freezer and fill in your outline with your mashed banana.

Step 6: Grab your small treats or dog’s food and finish the face with two eyes and a nose!

Step 7: Freeze for 2-3 hours or overnight and your homemade banana dog treat recipe is ready to go!

Flavors 2 & 3: Blueberry and Strawberry Peeps

Step 1: Follow the outline steps from the banana dog treat lick mat flavor.

Step 2: In a blender, combine a handful of blueberries with a splash or two of water and THEN a handful of chopped strawberries with a spoonful or two of plain Greek yogurt.

Pro Tip: Before you grab your lick mat from the freezer, grab a pizza pan or baking sheet and place your Lickimat Buddy on top. Any time I use liquids on dog lick mats, I always need a bit of support below or else things tend to spill everywhere.

Step 3: Fill in your outline with your blended blueberries OR blended strawberries and yogurt.

Step 4: Either go ahead and freeze for 4-5 hours or overnight and then stick on your treats/dog food with some dog-safe peanut butter or yogurt, or stick on now and freeze.

Pro Tip: Liquids do take longer to freeze, so if you can make it in the morning and give to your pup later on in the day or make it the night before I recommend it. I don’t want you to be disappointed when this frozen blueberry dog treat recipe or strawberry yogurt dog treat isn’t ready in 20 minutes!
