Joint Aid For Dogs: Nutramax Dasuquin With MSM Soft Chews
Diesel is the largest dog I have ever owned. I grew up with Labradors, which are large breed dogs, but Diesel jumps into the next category of extra large breed dogs like Mastiffs and Great Danes. While any size dog can experience joint pain and stiffness, large and extra large breed dogs need joint care to help alleviate any aches and pains and keep their mobility so they can still enjoy their favorite activities.
I wanted to start a series for large and extra-large dog breed care for fellow pet owners of our most-loved dog breeds like Labradors, Mastiffs, Great Danes, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and more! This series will cover tons of dog care tips and dog products that help aid in supporting our dog’s joint health and mobility. To kick things off, I wanted to begin with joint supplements for dogs!
Joint supplements for dogs are a great way to ensure the joint care for our dogs is well maintained. In this post, I’ll be sharing more about the Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM Soft Chews for large dogs and the results seen with Diesel.
What Are Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM Soft Chews?
Nutramax Dasuquin with MSM Soft Chews for large dogs are a joint aid for dogs that was designed to increase cartilage production, reduce pain and inflammation, and inhibit cartilage breakdown. This joint supplement for dogs helps those suffering from joint pain as a result of aging or from other joint diseases like Osteoarthritis, Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia.
Highly active dogs that participate in activities/sports like agility, fly ball and diving can also benefit from a joint supplement due to the increased amount of movement and stress on the joints, which can result in Osteoarthritis.
How To Give Dog Joint Supplements
Nutramax Dasuquin offers soft chews or chewable tablets. I went with the soft chews because they look like a treat versus the tablet form that would have reminded Diesel of his Trifexis flea & tick medicine that he absolutely hates to take (he’s a nightmare to give it to ha!).
When starting your dog on this joint supplement, there is a recommended initial period of 4-6 weeks where your dog will have two chews per day, depending on your dog’s weight (small dogs 10-29 lbs. will have 1). Dogs 60-120 pounds like Diesel and Annie, have an initial period of 2 chews per day. After the initial period is over you can keep them on the suggested maintenance level, which is 1 chew per day. We did the full six weeks with Diesel and have kept him on the 1 chew per day maintenance level and have seen great results. He was a bit stiff in his back legs and after being on this routine joint supplement, his ease of movement has greatly increased!
P.S. The back of the bag has all of this information on it as well for the size of dog you purchase the joint aid for.
I will add that some dogs will just take the soft chew as a treat and you won’t have any issues. If you have a picky eater, you may have sneak it into their food. Diesel took the treat perfectly fine at first and then I think he realized it was “medicine” and started spitting it out. Now, I cut it up, stir it up in his food and usually top his food with a little bit of cheese, strawberries, or other healthy snack that gets him excited about his meal.
What Helps Dog Joint Health?
In addition to joint supplements for dogs and any recommendations from your veterinarian, two things that are crucial for dog joint health are diet and exercise.
Both of these will vary from dog to dog, but maintaining a healthy diet and keeping your dog at the right weight with the recommended exercises from your vet can help aid in joint care for your dog. When your dog is at a healthy weight, less pressure is being put on your dogs joints, resulting in improved mobility.
I’m so happy that I found a great joint aid for my big dog Diesel that will give him such a happy and healthy life! If you’ve been thinking about getting a joint supplement for your dog, I highly recommend consulting with your veterinarian!
