DIY Circus Dog and Owner Halloween Costume

Spooky season is finally here and I’ve been loving all of the fun and creative Halloween costume ideas that have already started floating around the internet and social media channels. Growing up, my family and I loved dressing up our dogs for Halloween. We’ve had superwoman, a rufferee, spring break girl, and of course Diesel has worn many costumes as well.

Today’s costume idea is inspired by the traditional circus and The Greatest Showman. This DIY dog and owner Halloween costume idea is fun, easy, and takes barely any time to assemble. Let’s dive in!

1. Create Your Lion Costume (Dog)

Since Diesel’s costume is the easiest, let’s start with that! To complete your dog’s lion costume, all you need is the perfect lion mane. I found this one on Amazon for only $14. This particular mane also comes in a brown and black color which could look great on dogs with that variety of darker color fur such as a German Shepherd. No matter which one you go with, you’ll have a fierce, yet adorable, lion in your house!

2. Create Your Ring Master Costume (adult)

Even though the ring master costume has more parts to it than the lion, this costume calls for items that most likely already exist in your closet! For this costume you’ll need the following:

Items from closet:

  • White tank top
  • Black leggings
  • Black boots (tall or booties)

Items to buy:

I have had the same pair of black leggings for the longest time. If you’re in need for a new pair, I always swear by my Lauren Conrad black leggings. I also found my white tank top from Aerie and my black boots from Macy’s (very old).

My total cost for the other two items was about $30. I was a little picky on the top hat ($9) but there were many options for less than that! My ring master jacket was $20 and I purchased a size large that fit true to size.

3. Assemble Your Props/Scenery

When searching through Pinterest, I found a ton of options for backgrounds and props such as popcorn machines, circle wood bins to stand on as little stages for the lion or ring master and more. However, when I searched circus tent into Google, my favorite option appeared from IKEA.

IKEA has this children’s circus tent that is also the perfect size tent for most dogs (including Diesel!). When Diesel first saw it he was a bit confused as to what it was, but then he got more and more excited about the fact that he could go inside of it and pop his head right out! This tent is only $20 and took less than five minutes to assemble. Talk about a steal!

My “ring of fire” was crafted by a hula hoop I found at Walmart and some orange, yellow, and red tissue paper. You can design it anyway that you want, but I chose to put the different colored tissue paper in one corner so that Diesel could go through it for fun. All you need is some regular scotch tape!
