Raised Slow Feeder Dog Bowls: Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe Review

I have been wanting to get a raised dog feeder for my two large dogs for quite some time now. Since there are so many benefits of elevated dog bowls for large dogs, and dogs in general, I went on a mission to find the best ones out there and test them out!

Now, originally I got the Neater Pets dog elevated feeder for Diesel. But, after seeing where the height actually hit and knowing Annie’s eating routine (a.k.a. she’s a camel and primarily drinks after her meals during the day), I ended up giving it to her and getting a different one for Diesel (will share about that one soon!).

In this post I’m going to be doing a full review of the Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe, how it also doubles as a great raised slow feeder dog bowl and the benefits of raised dog bowls!

Benefits of Raised Dog Bowls:

You might be wondering, do I even need one of these for my dogs? You may or may not! Below I’m sharing the benefits of raised dog bowls, while also touching on a few things that can be dog specific or need more research!

1. Better Posture

The first reason I was looking for elevated dog bowls for my large dogs was to help their joints. Even if you’re new to my blog (which by the way, hi!), you can probably tell in my photo from above that Diesel is a pretty big boy! He’s over 100 pounds and since he’s an XL breed, I’ve always been extra aware of taking care of his joints. This benefit of raised dog bowls is that your dog will no longer be reaching down to the ground to eat or drink, creating better posture and reducing any strain on their neck, shoulders and spine, which can be helpful for many dogs, especially senior dogs. The biggest thing here is to ensure you have the proper size, which we’ll get into!

2. Prevents playing in the bowls

Do you have a dog that’s constantly playing with their food bowls and knocking everything everywhere? Raised feeders for dogs can help with this! Many raised feeders for dogs are designed with rubber grips or some sort of gripping texture on the bottom to help keep them in place (of course there are some that don’t have this). Many dogs when coming up to a dog elevated feeder are more likely just going to eat their food rather than search to find a way to knock it down (don’t quote me on that though my mischievous dog owners, ha!).

3. May Help Prevent BLoat

When dog raised feeders initially came out, one of the number one reasons that was marketed was to prevent bloat. Now, over the years there has been a lot of talk as to whether or not this is true. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of conclusive research to give a definitive yes or no, however, there are certain circumstances where it may be a requirement from your vet to help with digestion or other health issues. The main cause of bloat is from a fast eating dog who’s inhaling too much air as they eat. If you’re wanting to know how to get my dog to eat slower, I would recommend looking into slow feed bowls for dogs in addition to considering a dog elevated feeder. Neater Pets DOES have a special slow feed bowl for dogs for their dog elevated feeder, making this a great raised slow feeder dog bowl! I’ll get into that shortly too!

4. can create a cleaner eating environment (few factors here)

I’m sure you saw that I put the word “can” at the front there. This is something that was one of the initial marketing reasons along with #3 as to why dog owners should get raised feeders for dogs. To me, this is something that really depends on your dog and the type of dog elevated feeder you choose. For example, the Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe (with leg extensions) that I’m reviewing in this post has a splash guard and a patented filtration system to move any mess to a separate tray attachment. This will automatically help contain more messes than other dog elevated feeders that do not have these features. Neither of my dogs are really messy, but just like many dogs do, every time they take a sip of water, tons of water drips from their mouth as they walk away and gets everywhere. No raised feeder for dogs could prevent that, ha!

How To Measure Your Dog For A Dog Raised Feeder:

Lucky for us, in today’s world, dog raised feeders come in many different heights and sizes. To ensure you’re choosing the proper height for your dog, you need to do a quick measure first. Here’s what you have to do to pick the best size and an extra tip:

  1. Option 1: Ensure your dog is standing with their front feet directly underneath them. With a measuring tape, measure from the floor all the way up to where your dogs front legs meet their chest. That’s your measurement!
    • With this option, Annie measures between 14-16
  2. Option 2: Measure your dog from the floor all the way up to their shoulder and subtract 6″ for large dogs and 3″ for smaller.
    • With this option, Annie measures at the shoulder at 22, and subtracting 6 from that is 16!

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want the raised feeders for your dogs to be too high. This could actually harm your dog.

    • There are two versions of this feeder, the Deluxe version without leg extensions and the Deluxe version with extensions. I have the version with the leg extensions and the price difference between the two ranges from $3 for the smallest size only up to $7 more for the large, which really isn’t that much. Next is the breakdown of the pricing.
  4. Price:

P.S. If you choose to get it without the leg extensions, the leg extensions sold separately are more expensive. The small ones start at $11.99 and the large are $15.99. Definitely decide if you want them before you buy so you don’t lose money there!

2. Product Design:

What makes the Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe different from other elevated feeders for large dogs, is that it’s entire product design is to keep messy pets from making a mess. Again, we went over this note in the benefits section, but here are the really cool features they’ve designed that I still love!

  1. Splash Guard
    • If you have a dog that is super messy, this raised feeder for dogs has a splash guard that starts at 3″ for the small size and goes up to 6.5″ for the large!
  2. Patented Filtration System
    • Probably the coolest part in my opinion is this feature. The Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe is designed to have any excess water and mess drain into a separate tray to keep your dog’s raised feeder area clean! I think that’s just genius!
  3. Rubber Grips On Feet
    • The bottom of your Neater Pets Neater Feeder has rubber grips to help keep your raised slow feeder dog bowls still! I’ve used this for a few months now and it’s never moved!
  4. Easy Cleaning
    • The Neater Pets Neater Feeder and bowls are dishwasher safe! If it fits, the Neater Feeder can go on the top rack of your dishwasher and the stainless steel bowls on either rack. I do recommend emptying the water basin frequently to prevent any bacteria from building up and to just keep the area clean overall.

Additional Products I Recommend:

Neater Pets has a few different accessories you can get for your dog, but out of all of them, my favorite by far is The Niner Slow Feed Bowl For Dogs. Annie has always been a fast eating dog and I’m always using dog enrichment activities or trying out new dog slow feeder bowls/maze bowls for dogs to help her slow down when eating to keep her safe. When I tell you guys that this is BY FAR one of the best slow feeder dog bowls I’ve ever tried! Seriously!! Just for reference, Diesel is a pretty casual, normal paced eating dog and he gets a 1 &3/4 cup in each meal. Annie gets 1 cup in each meal. Diesel is done with his food before Annie is halfway! It. Is. Incredible!! It got to the point where I had to distract Diesel because he thought she got more food since he’s never done first, ha!

If you’re looking for raised slow feeder dog bowls for your pups, I think this combination is by far one of the best! Plus, it comes in 5 colors (I should’ve gotten the pink one, ha!).

4. How To Add Leg Extensions To Your Neater Pets NeateR Feeder Deluxe

Before I wrap up this post, I thought I’d share some quick tips on how to add on the leg extensions if you choose to get them for your Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe raised dog food bowl.

Step 1: Flip your Neater Pets Neater Feeder Deluxe upside down so the legs are facing up towards you and grab your leg extensions. They are labeled L for left and R for right!

Step 2: On your leg extension you will see a cut out circle and on the actual leg you will see another (raised) circle. Line up both circles and slide the leg into place.

Tip: The plastic on the outer parts of the leg and leg extensions also have to line up. Below is a more zoomed in photo so you can see that as it is a little hard to explain!
