Tailr QR Code Dog and Cat Tags Review
All my life, my dogs have actually never worn dog tags. For whatever reason, it just wasn’t something my family did. I remember going to PetSmart and seeing the dog tag machines by the front door and always wondering what options were inside. Fast forward to today, I still don’t use dog tags…until now!
I’ve seen funny dog tags or classic dog tags, and thought yeah okay, those are nice and all, but it needs to be different for me to actually spend money on one. I can officially say I have found that dog tag! A few months back I discovered this new brand called Tailr and thought what they had created was absolutely ingenious and a way to turn dog tags into something much more safe, helpful and honestly, cool!
Below is a detailed review of how Tailr’s QR code dog and cat tags are the next generation of smart & safe pet living!

QR Code Dog and Cat Tags Types:
For this review, I’m going to go into multiple areas including the types of QR code dog and cat tags available, sizing, how the product works (with a step-by-step video walk-through) and more. Let’s get started with the types of QR code dog and cat tags.
- Classic Pet Tag
- These pet id tags are exactly what you’d think they are. This style clips onto your pet’s collar like a regular pet collar tag. This is the style featured on my dogs collars and shown in the photos throughout.
- Sizing: Small and Large
- Both Annie and Diesel are wearing the size large. For reference, Diesel is 105 pounds and Annie is 67 pounds and I think the large looks perfect on both of them, if that helps you make a decision on sizing!
- Slide On Pet Tag
- This pet id tag style actually slides onto your pet’s collar with metal grips to hold it in place. This style eliminates the dangling feeling that some pets might not enjoy, or, if you’re into dog sports, many dog sports actually don’t let you have dangling tags (you usually have to tape them), so this option would be fantastic for that!
- Sizing: Small, Medium and Large
- Both of my cats have the size small and it fits them perfectly. Colonel Mustard is 11 pounds and Butler is 8 pounds. In my video below I go into detail about how the pet id tags fit on cats to help cat owners choose the right size!

Tailr also makes biothane dog and cat collars in five colors and four sizes: Small through XL! If you’ve never used a biothane collar before, I personally love this material for dog and cat collars because of many awesome reasons:
- Waterproof and odor resistant
- Easy to clean (just wipe right off!)
- Remains flexible in all weather
- Outlasts leather and nylon
At every single dog sport competition, especially dock diving, I only see biothane. On my dogs, these biothane collars fit great. Annie has the large and Diesel has the XL. For my cats however, the small was a bit big. I share more about sizing for cats in my video below, but I personally think that using either pet id tag style on a regular cat collar is the best choice. I did contact the team to let them know about how the size small biothane cat collar fit on cats and that an XS might be worth looking into (for small dogs too!) and they loved that feedback!

Tailr QR Code Dog and Cat Tags: How It Works
Alright, so this is obviously my favorite part! You know how everything nowadays requires a subscription? I mean, I can’t even watch all of my shows in one place anymore! Tailr’s QR code dog and cat tags require no subscription and their app is free! #winning! Here’s how it works.
Every single pet collar tag has a unique QR code on the back that will be for your specific pet. Once you get your tag, you’ll download the app and add your tag to your account. From there, you get to create this super detailed and helpful profile for your pet that has tons of details like:
- Grooming
- Health
- Shot Records
- Allergies
- Behavior
- and more!
My YouTube video shares a detailed walk-through of the entire app so you can see all of the options this pet management app can provide!
Once you have all of this information entered, anyone can scan your QR code dog or cat tag and see all of their public information. This is extremely helpful for groomers, veterinarians/vet tech’s, dog walkers, daycare or boarding facilities, friends watching your pet while you’re away and more!

What’s also amazing about these collar tags for pets, is that they also help connect lost pets with their owners. Just how a groomer can scan the tag to get all of the information, so can someone who found your lost pet!
Within the app, there is a “My Pet Is Missing” button that when pushed, immediately notifies every Tailr user in a certain mile radius to be on the lookout for your pet. Once your pet’s tag is scanned while your app is in “My Pet Is Missing” mode, it will immediately notify you of the exact location where it was scanned.
This is quite advanced compared to some smart dog collars on the market that I’ve found that only update their location every couple of minutes. Your pet could travel far in just a few minutes, so that exact location is beyond crucial and helpful!

To continue helping connect lost pets with their owners, they also have a Microchip lookup section on their website which is absolutely incredible! I’ve found a lost pet before, and once you have the microchip number, you have to jump through hoops many times to find which company it’s registered under. Having this is beyond amazing and I personally appreciate it so much!

If you’re looking for dog and cat collar id tags that go way beyond just being a pet id tag, you’ve got to check out Tailr’s QR code dog and cat tags. I haven’t seen anything like this before and love just how helpful their tags and app can be for pet owners in numerous situations.
