The Best Dog Gate For Your Home
One of the best items any dog parent can buy for their home is a dog gate. Since I was little we have always had a dog gate in our home. Recently I wrote “How To Crate Train Your Puppy” featuring one of my favorite pet brands, Carlson Pet Products and their large double door dog crate.
Today I am here to share all about Carlson Pet Product’s Extra Tall Pet Gate and the benefits of having a dog gate in your home. I would easily say Carlson has the best dog gates out there and that their wide variety of options and sizes really allows you to find exactly what you need!
How To Pick The Right Dog Gate
Before we dive into all of the benefits of having a dog gate, we have to know how to choose the best one for our needs, right? Dog gates come in all shapes, sizes, colors and materials that work for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
How big is my dog going to be/already is? What is their activity level/personality like?
If you currently have a puppy and are looking for a dog gate that will work as they grow, it’s best to know what size they will be when fully grown. You wouldn’t want to buy a short gate for a Great Dane! You also want to ask yourself, what is their activity level/personality like? I say this because if you have a high energy dog with springs for legs (where my boxer and border collie owners at?), you’re going to want to have a tall dog gate vs. a shorter one!
Where will my dog gate be used?
Are you currently needing an indoor dog gate or an outdoor dog gate? This is an important question because many indoor gates are not made with the same weather proofing material that outdoor gates have. Check The Measurements Of The Area You Want Blocked Off
You want to make sure that the dog gate you are purchasing will fit in the area you want blocked off. Carlson Pet Products is very thorough on providing gate dimensions and where each particular gate will fit. My apartment has pretty standard door widths and my extra tall pet gate came with a four inch extension piece that helped fill a slight gap perfectly!
If you already know that you will need something bigger, they have many expandable dog gates and extra wide dog gates.
1. Great Training Tool
Now let’s talk about the benefits of dog gates! Dog Gates are a great training tool for your puppy or adult dog. Dog gates are commonly used to separate off certain areas of a home that owners don’t want their dogs accessing. For instance in my home, I have the extra tall dog gate in my bedroom door because it’s honestly quite messy (guilty ha!) and Annie’s a very curious pup!

2. Provides Separation/A Break From Your Other Pets
Dog gates are also an incredible tool for providing separation or a break from your other pets or even children/guests that come over. Sometimes my dogs will play a little too hard and they honestly just need a break from each other, so one will go on one side of the dog gate and the other on the other side. For certain holiday gatherings, we will sometimes put the dog gate up to make sure that our guests aren’t overwhelmed by drooling fans (aka Thanksgiving ha!).
I also have a cat named Felix, and as mentioned above I have the bedroom blocked off. The bedroom is his room to have a break from our puppy Annie because while Diesel has learned how to act around a cat, Annie’s still learning ha! As you’ll see in the photos though, the pet gate I chose has a cat door which allows Felix the ability to come and go as he pleases! It’s also small enough for Annie to not fit through.
Funny story though, Annie DEFINITELY slipped through the cat door a few times when she was a few months younger. She had some practice at my parents house when they had a cat door and applied it to the gate ha! The cat door does come with a lock option if you ever need to use it.
