3 Easy Summer Frozen Dog Lick Mat Ideas

Since I work from home, I try to do as many dog enrichment activities as I can with Diesel and Annie. That way, while I’m on my computer working on things and having meetings, they can stay happy and healthy with fun dog puzzles and other dog enrichment ideas.

One dog enrichment idea that I love to prep each week are lick mat recipes for dogs! I have so much fun creating healthy lickimat recipes that are made with only a few ingredients, because let’s be honest, us dog parents are busy! Anything I can do in advance, always helps my week out!

This post is inspired by one of my most popular posts, 3 Easy Dog Lick Mat Ideas! I wanted to create 3 more easy dog lick mat ideas that are inspired by dog safe summer fruits and veggies. These frozen lickimat ideas are a great frozen summer dog treat and a great way to keep your dog cool in the summer. If you’ve been wondering what to put on a Lickimat, this post is for you!

Frozen Watermelon Lickimat Dog Treat

Two of the frozen Lickimat ideas in this post only use one ingredient, so I thought, why not keep it super simple to start! The first frozen summer dog treat features Diesel’s all time favorite summer fruit, watermelon!

Watermelon is a super refreshing snack for dogs and a great summer dog treat to enjoy all season long. With watermelon and dogs, there are two things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t let your dog eat the seeds
  • Don’t let your dog eat the rind

If your dog ate the watermelon rind or the seeds, contact your veterinarian as soon as you can. Watermelon seeds can cause blockages in dogs and the rind can be hard to digest and cause other gastrointestinal issues.

To make this frozen watermelon dog treat, all you need is a blender (I use my Ninja bullet blender), a cookie sheet or cutting board, a few pieces of chopped watermelon (rind and seeds removed), and a Lickimat!

P.S. Want to know more things you can put on a dog lick mat? I’ve created 20+ easy-to-make dog lick mat recipes in my new What To Put On A Lick Mat: The Ultimate Dog Enrichment Cookbook (only $12.99)! This cookbook is a digital download so you can prop it up on your phone or iPad as you’re making tons of healthy dog lick mat ideas for your pup!

Step 1: For dog lick mat recipes with liquids, use a Lickimat with openings or squares like the Lickimat buddy (featured here) or the Lickimat Tuff Playdate (featured in the third recipe). These styles work best since the liquid has more places to go (i.e. the Lickimat soother isn’t the best option for this).

Step 1: Grab your Lickimat Buddy and place it on top of a baking sheet or cutting board. This will help transport it to your freezer at the end since this recipe can get a little messy!

Step 2: Grab your blender and add in a few pieces of watermelon with a spritz or two of water. (You would think watermelon would be able to blend easily without water added, since the name has water in it, ha, but no, make sure to add a little bit to help blend!).

Step 3: Slowly pour your blended watermelon onto your Lickimat Buddy. You can use a spoon to slowly spread it across too. (Don’t drag your spoon across or else you will be wearing watermelon. Not speaking from experience…ha!).

Step 4: Stick in the freezer for 2-4 hours or overnight and serve to your pup!

This frozen watermelon dog treat takes a little big longer to freeze than some of the others featured here. If you’re prepping for the week, this is a great one to make the night before!

Frozen Peas Lick Mat Recipe For Dogs

While we’re on the single ingredient dog treat recipe train, let’s do another! This next frozen lickimat idea is made out of mashed frozen peas.

For this dog lick mat idea, choosing frozen peas is the best option. Many canned peas and other vegetables have salt added, which isn’t the best option for dogs. Grabbing frozen peas for dogs from the grocery store is always best and safest!

Featured here is the Lickimat Buddy XL. This frozen Lickimat idea also works great on the Lickimat Soother if you have that! Here’s how to make:

Step 1: Cook your frozen peas for dogs (I use the steamable bags).

Step 2: Grab a small bowl and a fork (I use this cocktail muddler, that I also use to mash avocadoes for my breakfast, ha!) and mash your peas.

Step 3: Grab a knife and spread all across your Lickimat.

Step 4: Freeze for 1-2 hours or overnight!

Out of all the frozen Lickimat ideas featured in this post, this dog lick mat recipe freezes the fastest. So, if you wanted to make this one and give it to your dog a few hours later, it should be ready!

Frozen Blueberry Strawberry Yogurt Lickimat Dog Treat

Last but not least is Annie’s personal favorite out of these three recipes, the frozen blueberry, strawberry, yogurt Lickimat dog treat recipe. Annie is my berry loving queen, which is great because strawberries and blueberries are a great snack for dogs!

For this frozen dog lick mat idea, you will need only 1-2 strawberries, a small handful of blueberries, 1-3 spoonfuls of plain Greek yogurt (no xylitol), a blender and a Lickimat (featured here is the Lickimat Tuff Playdate). Here’s how to make this tasty dog lick mat idea (P.S. I tried it and it’s pretty good, ha!).

Step 1: Wash all of your berries and add to your blender with your yogurt and 1-2 splashes of water.

Step 2: Blend everything together.

Step 3: Pour onto your Lickimat Tuff Playdate and use a spoon to spread if necessary (again, spread it slowly or you will be wearing this too, ha!).

Step 4: Freeze for 2-3 hours or overnight and let your dog enjoy!

This was actually my first time using the Lickimat Tuff Playdate and I really liked it for liquid/yogurt based recipes. Even though my dogs will enjoy destroying some of their toys, they’ve never been ones to chew up their enrichment treat toys like their Lickimats, KONG’s, or Toppls. Because of this, I can’t fully attest to how well the Lickimat Tuff Playdate works for that reason, but I can recommend it as a fantastic option for those types of dog lick mat recipes!
