Dog Friendly Cupcake Christmas Wreath Recipe With Dog Safe Icing
I was scrolling through Pinterest a few weeks ago for Christmas recipe ideas when I saw a Christmas cupcake wreath. I thought “oh my gosh, that’s so cute, I bet I could create a dog version!”. I’ve been making a handful of homemade Christmas dog treat recipes this season, but this dog friendly cupcake Christmas wreath recipe is one of my favorites!
In this post I’ll share how to make these easy dog friendly cupcakes plus how to make the naturally colored dog safe icing (P.S. I used vegetables!). Check out this festive dog treat recipe below!

- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
- 1/2 cup shredded carrot

Equipment List:
- Cupcake Liners
- Cupcake Pan
- Electric Mixer or Mixing Bowl

How To Make Dog Friendly Cupcakes:
These easy homemade peanut butter dog cupcakes with applesauce and carrot only take a few minutes to make!
- Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Step 2: Start by putting everything but the flour and strawberries into a mixing bowl.
(The strawberries will be used at the end to decorate your dog cupcake Christmas wreath.)
- Step 3: After you have mixed the first part of the ingredients together, slowly begin to add the whole wheat flour into the bowl and mix as you continue to add. I recommend setting your mixer to a low setting to prevent mess!
- Step 4: Fill your cupcake pan with the liners and start scooping your batter into the lined pan.
Pro Tip: Do not try to fill your cupcake liners to the top. These cupcakes do not rise high and the batter is thicker than regular cake batter. You can use a spoon or ice cream scooper to transfer the batter to the pan!
- Step 5: Bake for 20-24 minutes (Check at 20 to avoid burning!)
Dog Safe Icing Ingredients:
For this dog safe icing, I started with this Blue Buffalo Dog Safe Icing recipe I found online and then I added my own touch to turn it green! I searched all over trying to find a simple frosting recipe for dogs, and this one was the easiest, with the least amount of ingredients, and of course, it’s safe for dogs!
Dog Safe Icing Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (NO Xylitol)
- 1/2 cup corn starch
- Handful of kale
- Handful of spinach
- 1-2 tablespoons of water
Equipment Needed:
- Blender
P.S. This dog yogurt icing recipe calls for tapioca starch, which is really hard to find by the way. You can use regular corn starch instead!
How To Make Dog Safe Icing:
Making this dog safe frosting is also super easy! Below are 3 easy steps:
Step 1: Combine the corn starch and plain Greek yogurt in a small bowl.
Step 2: Grab your blender and add a handful of kale, handful of spinach and a tablespoon of water. Blend together. If you see that it’s not fully chopped or mixed, add a little bit more water, but only add a little bit at a time until it’s fully mixed.
Pro Tip: I used the combination of spinach and kale because just the spinach made the icing too light green. You want to start with the darkest green possible since you’re mixing it in with the white.
Step 3: Mix in your vegetable mixture with your combined corn starch and plain Greek yogurt to create your festive green dog friendly frosting.
P.S. If you liked this dog friendly frosting idea, it can also be used as dog cake icing or as frosting for dog treats!
Decorate Your Dog Cupcake Christmas Wreath!
Now it’s finally time to decorate your dog friendly Christmas cupcake wreath! Grab your homemade dog cupcakes, chopped strawberries and green dog safe frosting to begin assembling!
Pro Tip: Keep your dog safe icing in the small bowl! I tried creating my own piping bag for the dog safe icing in a Ziploc bag, but to be honest, it was easier to just use a knife and spread the dog yogurt icing onto the homemade dog cupcakes. I’m all about convenience, ha!
To make the “bow” on the top of my dog friendly cupcake Christmas wreath, I used the ProDen PlaqueOff Systemâ„¢ Crunchy Dental Bones, but you can use any dog treat your pup loves! I know that Milk-Bone usually has festive colored treats this time of the year that would also be perfect for this!
